PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT 29/2019
The Coordinating Committee of Graduate Studies in Economics at FEA-USP publicly announces the opening of registrations for the selective process of applicants to the Doctoral Course in Economics in the Area of Economic Theory, starting in 2020.
1. General Provisions
1.1. The successful applicant must hold a Master´s or Doctoral degree valid in Brazil. Candidates holding a title granted by foreign institutions shall have it acknowledged or revalidated (given the accurate equivalence) by a Brazilian institution acknowledged by the Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC) until the enrollment date, according to the official FEA/USP calendar.
1.2. The Doctoral course in Economics at FEA-USP in the area of Economic Theory requires full-time dedication. The course is free of charge, and classes are held in the mornings and afternoons (Mondays to Fridays).
1.3. Scholarship of the Program shall be assigned, when available, to students accepted strictly according to the classification in the selective process.
Up to 15 (fifteen) vacancies are offered. The vacancies offered will not necessarily be filled.
3.1. Registration Period.
Registrations will take place from September 9 to November 8, 2019, and shall be made exclusively online, through the site: http://www.portalfea.fea.usp.br/economia/pos-graduacao/processo-seletivo. Registration will only be effected upon presentation of the complete documentation (sent in PDF files), as described in item 3.2
3.2. Documentation for Registration.
a) Online Registration form;
b) Copy of Bachelor´s Degree along with respective academic record;
c) When available, copy of Master´s or Doctoral degree or completion certificate;
d) Academic record and contents of disciplines attended in master´s or doctorate programs;
e) Updated Curriculum;
f) A statement of purpose with at most 5 (five) pages, 1.5 spacing between lines and Times New Roman font, size 12 (twelve), written by applicants explaining their interest in the program, objectively outlining the motives which drove them to (1) choose doctoral degree in Economics in the area of Economic Theory at FEA-USP as the most suitable to their academic interests; (2) consider that their profile fits the program. The text shall also specify the area or theme of interest to be developed during the doctoral studies.
g) Score and general classification in the National Selection Examination of ANPEC (Brazilian Association of Graduate Programs in Economics), taken between 2015 and 2019, or GRE (Graduate Record Examination), taken in 2015 or later, with a minimum score of 155 in the quantitative section (Quantitative Reasoning). The verbal reasoning section and analytical writing section will not be considered.
h) Master´s dissertation or Doctoral thesis submitted in their institution of origin. In case the same is not yet in its final version, send the most recent version available.
4. Selective Process
The selection of applicants to the Doctoral course in the area of Economic Theory shall be made by a selection committee composed of professors from the Graduate Studies Program, assigned by the Coordinating Committee of Graduate Studies in Economics, and encompasses two stages:
1st Stage – Candidates shall be classified by the selection committee according to the documentation submitted. The score of each applicant shall be a weighted average of the score granted to the dissertation or thesis (weight 20%), Curriculum, score and classification from ANPEC or GRE, Bachelor´s degree and academic record, Master´s or doctoral academic record (weight 50%) , and text described in item 3.2, sub-item “f”(weight 30%). Applicants who have scored less than 5.0 (out of a total of 10) shall be dismissed. Other applicants shall be authorized to proceed to the second stage.
2nd Stage – Applicants approved in the first stage shall attend the second stage, consisting of an in person or online interview as described in item 3.2, sub-item “f”. The selection committee shall grant a global score from 0 to 10 to the presentation and argumentation of each applicant´s statement of purpose. Applicants who score less than 7.0 (seven) shall be dismissed. The other applicants shall be deemed approved according to the order of classification and limit of available vacancies.
During the realization of the 2nd Stage, the use of any electronic device or any device that enables communication with the outside of the room where the 2nd Stage is taking place will not be allowed. All devices alike should be turned off, under penalty of disqualification and elimination of the selective process.
Applicants can present their appeals within 48 hours following the publication of each stage result. The applicant must explicitly state the reasons for the appeal.
The selection committee will judge the appeals and will base their decision within deadlines set out below
Appeals must be emailed by the applicant to firstname.lastname@example.org. The email title should be “Recurso TE 2020 – applicant’s name”
6. Conditions of the Selective Process
Only applicants approved in the 2nd stage will be entitled to enroll in the Doctoral Course in Economics in the area of Economic Theory, taking into account the number of vacancies.
It is forbidden to record any stage of the selection process by any means and by any applicant.

Announcement of result of first stage: Nov. 19, 2019
Deadline to submit an appeal for the first stage result: Nov. 21, 2019
Announcement of the final result of first stage: Nov. 26, 2019
Text Presentation and Argumentation: Dec. 02 to Dec. 04, 2019
Announcement of result of second stage: Dec. 06, 2019
Deadline to submit an appeal for the second stage result: Dec. 08, 2019
Final Result: until Dec. 17, 2019
8. Final Provisions
By applying, the candidate accepts the rules and instructions for the selection process contained herein and in the notifications already issued or which might be publicly announced
Omitted cases shall be settled by the Coordinating Committee of the Program in Economics.
The Selection Committee and the Coordinating Committee of the Program in Economics are entitled not to fill all the vacancies.
