ABSTRACT*

The research objective is to explain how large companies develop hybrid capabilities with the base of the pyramid. It’s a qualitative study, It employed a process research design. I studied three cases of large companies that are developing hybrid initiatives with the low-income population in Brazil. The study conducted three extensive case studies to describe the development of hybrid initiatives. Then I proposed two theoretical models that analyze and explain how the big companies develop hybrid capacities with the base of the pyramid using their dynamic capacities. I elaborated long case studies to describe how large companies develop their hybrid initiatives. Then I proposed two theoretical models on how the big companies develop hybrid capacities with the base of the pyramid using their dynamic capacities. The first theoretical model was aimed at simplifying previous theorizations using common elements  to any organization. The second theoretical model sought to advance the field of dynamic capacities to explain this concept, as well as to increase the power of explanation of dynamic capacities. In this way, the main theoretical contribution was the discovery of four engines and two rhythms of change that explain how dynamic capabiliites work. In addition, this study created the concepts of hybrid capabiliites and turning point hybridization
